I always wondered what it would be like to be a novelist and to have a deadline and no way of knowing how you would meet it. I imagined that it would be thrilling. Now I know it’s not. It’s a little bit challenging, and a little bit scary. But this is what I signed on for, so I’m committed to getting it right.
How much can you revise a manuscript before squeezing the life out of it? More than you would think. Right now I have a few holes to plug that opened up after I pulled a subplot pov. I still need pieces of that subplot, but from my heroine’s or hero’s eyes. And it has to flow smoothly into the story. I have the rest of the week and weekend to get busy and get this thing done. My deadline isn’t for another two weeks, but my kids are coming to town next week and I’d like to spend time with them.
Congrats on your book deal, Cindy!
On balance, it sounds like “good” pressure to me…although when I’ve been on a deadline in a newsroom, I’ve sometimes felt differently. 😉
