Free Week Results…so far

I am not a marketing genius; the past 5 free days were my publisher’s idea. Wow it was fun. I printed out the page showing Blue Heaven at the top of the chart. It’s fun being #1. Today’s a different story, of course. Everyone got the book free and it’s down somewhere around 500K in paid lists. However, there has been some unexpected added benefit.

My first book, a writing manual with dollops of memoir, is #75 on the paid list, (which, let’s face it, that’s the one that counts) for adult and community education. I have the whole story of that book, how I came up with the idea right down to how I created a small press and handled distribution.

Your Words, Your Story was printed in ’07, early indie days. The chapter on self-publishing mentions Amazon’s Create Space. I interviewed someone who published with them and she graciously allowed me to use her experience in the book. Today, I could add more now with KDP and the digital book explosion. But the basic facts are there.

I also noted that my indie novel, Sister Issues, is about six times higher on the lists than the two newer books. Both my indies are .99 cents, and that may be a factor in their continued sales. What happened is that those free days for Blue Heaven made me and my back list more visible. And I’m pretty happy with that outcome.

Finally, Something For You:)

BlueHeaven_w7796_300I’ve already announced that from October 1-5 Blue Heaven will be free for everyone on Kindle. You don’t need a Kindle to buy it, you just need the app, which is free on iTunes.

As is my tradition, in my blog birthday month, I like to give presents to my readers. I finally figured out what I want to send to the first four of you who comment on this post with a specific suggestion about what I should post next. I need four different ideas, folks. What would you like to read about here going forward?

As I transitioned from writer-seeking-publication into published author, I knew the blog would have to change from what it had been. I’d reached the goal I’d been pursuing for so long. I have a great publisher who has put out two of my three novels; they are willing to grow with me beyond romance into women’s fiction. Blue Heaven is the first in the “Blue Lake” series about a small tourist town on a big lake. And don’t worry, for me women’s fiction just means I get to tell two (or more!) love stories instead of one. I’m a die-hard romantic and am having so much fun creating stories about the people in Blue Lake, both newcomers and those with deep roots.

It took me a while to figure out that now I need to write for readers and maybe not so much for writers anymore. After eleven years, there isn’t much left to say about the writing process except if you want something NEVER give up. That’s how I snagged my dream.

Onto the prize. I now have three books in print: Your Words, Your Story, The Paris Notebook, and Blue Heaven. Well, Blue Heaven is set for world-wide release and print sometime in November. What I will do is send out all three print editions to the first four people (Sorry, USA only. Foreign postage is really expensive.) who present me with a great topic for a post in the comments. You will get the prizes when I get the Blue Heaven print editions, but the little contest starts now.

Free Kindle Book Update

Since I last wrote, my free (until Sunday 1/15) Kindle writing manual, Your Words, Your Story, has gone from #3 million to #184. I am simply amazed, in awe, and grateful. In case you’ve ever wondered, it feels way better to give than to receive. I have just been bouyed by this effort far beyond my expectations.

Long time readers of this blog saw the first tiny spark of an idea grow into what I used to call “my little book.” It wasn’t a novel, so that’s the way I thought of it. I’ve gathered all the posts from the journey of my little book here. And thank you all for clicking “buy” on my free book.

Free For Five Days!

I am so excited!!

My first book, Your Words, Your Story, a creative writing manual with a splash of memoir, will be free for all Kindle users (not just Prime members) for five days, starting tomorrow (1/11) and ending Sunday (1/15). I have no control over what time the “free” promo begins and ends, so make sure to check the price before you buy. If it doesn’t say FREE check back.

If you have been wanting to write that novel or short story, now is the time to grab the motivation and direction you’re seeking by loading my book to your Kindle for free. I wrote it in response to a creative writing course I have taught many times at my local community college, so it’s got homework. You don’t have to do it, lol. No grades either. Yippee!

I’m so excited! Did I already say that? I’m emulating Mike Wells here. Thanks for the advice, Mike! I took it to heart.
