I won’t be teaching creative writing again for awhile, but since so many of my students ask for more, here’s something my friend Cindy LaFerle will be teaching in Oakland County this fall. I’d actually like to take this class myself…
Getting Personal: Writing Memoirs & Personal Essays
Whether your goal is to write for personal pleasure or publication, this two-session workshop will help you conquer your fear of self-expression and inspire you to fall in love with the memoir. Learn how to craft your life experiences into marketable short essays for magazines — or chapters for your own memoir. The workshop begins with an in-depth discussion on what makes compelling personal writing, and will also include plenty of in-class writing time. Using examples from my book of personal essays, Writing Home, I’ll share the secrets of marketing short essays to a variety of media. New writers are welcome. Please bring a pen and a notebook, plus two or three photos depicting special events or people in your life. Class size is limited — so please register early to ensure your space.
